Open-source and highly customizable lyrics app that supports all popular music players and can display lyrics in several ways on your desktop
Singing along to your music is fun, unless you happen not to be familiar with the lyrics. It becomes especially annoying if you aren't a native English speaker and are hardly able to make out what the artists are saying.
LyricsX is an open-source app that helps you out in this scenario. It can find lyrics for pretty much any song out there, from various services, and display them on your desktop in several different ways. It is easy to use, unobtrusive and very customizable.
Get lyrics from multiple services and for all major music players
Whether you use iTunes, Spotify, Vox or Audirvana, this application has got you covered. It can detect playback in any of these apps automatically, search for lyrics online and display them on your desktop.
Now, of course, lyrics are provided by a wide range of services, and some can only be found on specific sites. LyricsX relies on 163 Music, QQ Music, Kugou Music, Xiami Music, TTPod and Gecimi. It can select the best source automatically, but you can also set a preferred one.
Song lyrics on your desktop and in the menu bar
Once you've started playing a song, the app will grab the lyrics and display them via a transparent overlay just above the Dock, karaoke style. This overlay can be customized in several ways, as you can change its position, font, and colors.
You can also view the lyrics in a classic window that remains on top of all other applications and can be resized freely. This mode can be useful if you want to view everything at once or search for a specific verse.
Lastly, LyricsX can show the lyrics in the menu bar, to the left of the app icon. While they can be difficult to follow, as only one line is displayed at a time, they are less distracting.
Supports bilingual lyrics
This app should be particularly interesting for Chinese users, as it can display lyrics in both Chinese and English at the same time. Moreover, it can perform automatic conversions between traditional and simplified Chinese.
Overall, LyricsX is one of the best applications of this type we have come across, and it is most definitely worth a try. Not only does it support a bunch of media players and lyrics services, but it is also extensively customizable and easy to use. To top it all off, the app is also open-source.
