Weather for the day was expecting rain but never took place and the temperature was warm, which was good for racing. The condition of the karts were not in their best condition with poor laptimes. I was going into the race carrying an overall 2nd in the championship, therefore keeping pace and trying to get more points was my main directive of the day.
Qualifying session ran smooth without any incident. Although I felt the kart have good balance, but engine was not performing very well, a bit of adjustment to the carburetor did help a little but not a lot during the seesion. At the end of the session, I noticed that the the airbox inlet was facing inwards, affectively preventing any fresh air from going into the engine which taxed on engine performance. Looking at the result from my time, I believed my kart will perform well after the airbox is fixed. I qualified 7th for this session.
I was out of luck on Heat 1 for kart 39 was involved in a serious accident, therefore I was forced to choose another kart. All the karts were not performing well that day, therefore choices were limited. I gambled myself with kart 3 for that was a pretty well performing kart last time when I was racing with HKKU. The balance of the kart was still good for kart 3 but the performance of the engine was really bad. I gave in everything I got to maintain my position of 8th.
Realized that I could not continue with kart 3, I took an advice from a fellow racer and took kart 18 which had just finished it's repairs. Kart 18 was performing well according to the result from other race, and later on it did perform as expected. With great performance of the kart, I finished 1st for this heat.
Perhaps I over raced the engine from last session, the performance of the kart did not last for the entire race. My final qualifing position was pole, but that position quickly dropped to 3rd on race start, but I immediately regained 2nd within the first lap. Engine performance started to drop progressively midway and my pace slowed significantly. Although I tried my best to gain a significant gap between myself and others from behind in the beginning, but it was not enough to maintain my position. On the last lap, knowing that I probably could not hold my 2nd position for any longer and to prevent engine failure, I switched to defensive driving mode, but an unfortunate hit from behind caused a spin and I dropped to 5th by the time I got back on track. The final result for me was 4th for there was a penalty for the driver who hit me and a penalty for the driver who finished 3rd.
The result of the race adds another 8 points to my CKK championship total.
